Jan 27, While I do suspect that many LPNs are able to actually pass NCLEX- RN because of their critical thinking skills, experience, and excellent test taking skills, there is no way that they would allow that I know of an LPN that has not had formal education to sit for the exam.
An accreditated school must send records to the state board of nursing stating that the student has successfully completed their RN program for a candidate to even be allowed to apply for the test. Jan 2, If this was ever to be true, i doubt if anyone would ever want to go to school. If its too good to be true, then it aint.
You have to go to school, no otherway around it. Has 10 years experience. Jan 9, I know that this was posted in but I wanted to say.. But imagine her surprise when she got a letter stating she would have to retake the test..
I believe there is a requirement for so many hours of classroom and clinical instruction, and the school has to keep track of that to prove to the state BON that the student actually got it. LPNs need a minimum of hours, and RNs need apparently college credits plus classroom and clinical hours of instruction, but I don't actually know what the criteria are without looking up the rules, lol.

In order to take the test, most states require you to have a minimum of an associates degree in nursing, or a diploma from a hospital nursing school. In California, licensed vocational nurses can take a special credit program and "challenge" the test, or take it without the usual required education, to become an RN.
Many community and technical colleges offer this program. Check for any prerequisite classes that you did not take during the LVN program, such as chemistry or anatomy and physiology. Take these classes before applying to the program.
Apply to the program of your choice. According to the state board of nursing, the classes in the program must include both theory and clinical practice, encompassing advanced medical-surgical, mental health, psychiatric and geriatric nursing, physiology and microbiology.
