Friar Laurence makes their decisions without their parents' permission. Romeo and Juliet's marriage leads to their tragic end. Friar Laurence marries Romeo and Juliet in the hope of getting two families together. In Othello and Romeo and Juliet the father-daughter relationships of Brabantio and Desdemona and Juliet and Capulet focuses on love and possess.
Similar to Juliet, Desdemona has a dilemma of choosing a lover over her family. Both works can compare to one another because of the father disagreements and greed over their daughters. Shakespeare uses Desdemona and Brabantio as a father-daughter relationship founded on love and possessiveness because he is manipulative on whom his daughter can or cannot marry. Desdemona should have the right to marry who she wants to spend her entire life with but at such a young age her father says he knows what is best for her.
In contrast to this Juliet's relationship with her father is one of the main underlying storylines in the play, and the way it is dramatised helps explains why many things are the way they are in Verona, which is the city which the Capulets and the Montagues live in. Shakespeare introduces the relationship between father and daughter in Act 1 Scene 2. Old Capulet is talking to Paris, a suitor whom he wants Juliet to marry.
The audience hears of Capulet describing Juliet as his only child, saying 'Earth hath swallow'd all my hopes but she; she is the hopeful lady of my heart' lines This gives the impression that he cares deeply for his daughter, and is a good father. One reason to blame his is when Juliet disagrees with her father about marrying Count Paris, he threatens to disown her from the family. He exploites Roderigo as a source of money and an unwitting accomplice in his plot to bring down Othello.
When finally cornered and charged with his wickedness, Iago refuses to speak or to repent or explain his actions, and he goes to his punishment still surrounded by mystery.
Desdemona A noble Venetian lady, daughter of Brabantio. She organizes her life intelligently and shows courage, love, and loyalty in following her husband into danger. She accompanies Othello to Cyprus on the campaign against the Turks but finds him becoming distant and making wild accusations against her.
She firmly believes that he will see that she is true to him, but when she realizes he is about to kill her, she can only feel despair and grief. She dies declaring her love for him. Brabantio A Venetian Senator, Desdemona's father. He is angry at his daughter's choice of husband but can do nothing once the marriage has taken place, and the Venetian Senate has accepted it. He warns Othello that Desdemona is a clever deceiver.
Roderigo A Venetian nobleman in love with Desdemona. He has more money than sense and pays Iago to court Desdemona on his behalf. Brabantio's irrational fears about his daughter's interracial marriage make him a central figure in the play's examination of race and sex which you can read more about in our " Themes " section.
