It is a sleeper in terms of being known as a quality deer producing state but consistently produces trophy quality bucks. The entire state of Indiana enforces a one buck only policy during the regular deer season. Hunters may use rifle cartridges with bullet diameters. On public land, the cartridges look to be straight-wall cartridges, and the full list can be found on the Indiana DNR website. You are required to buy a license for each antlerless deer harvested, but this is an excellent way to do a lot of deer hunting.

Once quotas have been reached in the county, bonus licenses will no longer be sold. There is a seasonal bag limit of 10 deer in deer reduction zones, and each license is only good for one harvested deer. An additional license must be purchased for each deer. Good luck to you both. Bill, I am planning on hunting Ohio Public land from Nov What is your best recommendation for stand locations during that time?

Or hunt over the buck sign? I would also like to know if the hunting thermal tunnels on the leeward side of ridges was a good strategy for this week? Or is it too soon? Curtis, I am not sure what thermal tunnels are, but anytime you hunt the lee side of a ridge you will get swirling if the wind is blowing much over a few miles per hour.

I avoid them for that reason at all times. I agree with Bill. We have a farm in SE ohio. Like many we time our vacation around our knowledge of the past years. Late October up through the 1st week of November has been the best ….. Deer do not have sweat glands.. Best tip is find a hot doe and you will find the bucks. However late October pre rut you will find the bigger bucks hanging off a distance from food sources…. Also, decoying and calling seem to be more effective late October and first few days of November from my experience.

So the above info is based on more mature deer. What is your thinking on this? Good evening, can anyone tell me a little bit about when rut begins in northeast Ohio and maybe some pointers on killing a mature buck during the rut? Thanks in advance, wishing everyone a great season, be safe. Wilmer, the dates should the be the same in all of Ohio. But the best dates are most commonly around November 7 and if you still have a tag, around November The build up to the rut is much longer and easier to hunt than the days that trail after.

So focus on roughly Halloween through November The simplest way to find bucks during this time is to find the does and hunt near them. That is where the bucks will be going, but you have to hunt carefully because if the does figure out you are there all the time they will stop moving naturally and then they will start disappearing and the bucks will be harder to kill too.

Here in central WV, the oldest bucks seem to really be on their feet in the daytime anywhere from Nov. It seems like the last few days of October are really good hunting but then the first few days of November seem non existent for the older bucks! There does seem to be a slight lull around November 1, but there is no reason for that. The does are progressively becoming receptive, so maybe it is just a coincidence that we have not seen great hunting from November I have killed a few bucks in that timeframe, Jared shot a really good buck on November 1 last year.

But nothing like the number I have killed and the pro staff have killed from roughly November I have not seen particularly great hunting after November 11, but I am sure, again, it could just be the small sample size of basing this on just my own experiences and those of the pro staff.

Judging by our pro staff and the photos we get for the gallery from viewers, it really is hard to beat November 3 — 11 roughly. I would not miss those dates if you are hunting whitetails north of Georgia. I have hunted in northwest Ohio for 20 years and November are consistently the best days to hunt in my area if all other factors weather, hunting pressure, etc.. The days leading up to Nov 11th tend to be best. Many on my wall have Nov written on the back of the plaque.

By , the statewide deer population began to decrease in response to increased harvest of antlerless deer. This was necessary because uncontrolled growth of the deer herd would be disastrous for both the deer and people of Indiana. Damage to agricultural and forest crops would become economically unbearable and the destruction of natural plant communities by sustained deer herbivory would produce smaller, less-healthy deer.

In DNR adjusted its deer management goal to manage deer in a more targeted manner to better balance ecological, recreational, and economic needs of all Indiana citizens in each county. Hunting is an excellent tool for maintaining a stable deer population while annually providing outdoor recreation opportunities and fresh venison to over , Hoosiers.

Hunting and other outdoor recreation activities are primary industries in our scenic counties and are important for these economies. Totals include deer harvested in State Park Reduction Hunts, More data available in the Indiana White-tailed Deer Report.
